The Preservation Trust of Vermont is a charitable, non-profit organization founded in 1980 to initiate, stimulate and assist local and statewide efforts to preserve and use Vermont's rich collection of historic, architectural, cultural and community resources. The Trust has had enormous success preserving great Vermont buildings.

The Vermont Energy Investment Corporation (VEIC), founded in 1986, is a non-profit organization with approximately 100 employees. VEIC's mission is to reduce the economic, social, and environmental costs of energy consumption through the promotion of cost-effective energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. VEIC provides services for Efficiency Vermont - the nation's first statewide 'energy efficiency utility' - as well as residential energy services, business energy services, and planning and evaluation consulting.

It manages 354 acres of farmland, nursery, compost production, trails, and wildlife corridors along the Winooski River in Burlington, Vermont.

CNU is a San Francisco-based non-profit organization that was founded in 1993. The group works with architects, developers, planners and others involved in the creation of cities and towns, teaching them how to implement the principles of the New Urbanism. These principles include coherent regional planning, walkable neighborhoods and attractive, accommodating civic spaces. CNU has over 2,000 members throughout the United States and around the world. CNU sponsors annual conferences, known as Congresses, for the sharing and discussion of the best practices in New Urbanism.

Smart Growth America is a coalition of nearly 100 advocacy organizations that have a stake in how metropolitan expansion affects our environment, quality of life and economic sustainability. Their site is the country's premier resource for Smart Growth information.
Enterprise Foundation www.enterprisecommunity.org

The Enterprise Foundation rebuilds communities. Their mission is to see that all low-income people in the United States have the opportunity to move up and out of poverty and into the mainstream of American life. Since their inception, Enterprise and its family of related organizations have raised and invested $4.4 billion in loans, equity and grants to create 144,000 homes for low-income people. Both partners of the Hartland Group have worked closely with Enterprise on housing and economic development projects for years.

The Hartland Group's partners worked closely with Jonathan Rose in his capacity as the Greyston Foundation Board Chair, and as development partners on a number of affordable housing projects. Jonathan's company has become one of the country's leading New Urbanist developers and his website has additional helpful development links.

This Florida panhandle development showed the world that there is a modern alternative to sprawl development and is considered by many to represent the birth of the New Urbanist development movement. Hartland Group partner Miro Weinberger discovered the development while going to Red Sox spring training games as a kid and has returned to visit whenever possible.

ULI-the Urban Land Institute is a non-profit research and education organization supported by its members. Founded in 1936, the institute now has more than 40,000 members worldwide representing the entire spectrum of land use and real estate development disciplines, working in private enterprise and public service.

As the preeminent, multidisciplinary real estate forum, ULI facilitates the open exchange of ideas, information and experience among local, national and international industry leaders and policy makers dedicated to creating better places. The mission of the Urban Land Institute is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit organization committed to expanding sustainable building practices. USGBC is composed of more than 15,000 organizations from across the building industry working to advance structures that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work. Members includes building owners and end-users, real estate developers, facility managers, architects, designers, engineers, general contractors, subcontractors, product and building system manufacturers, government agencies, and non-profits. USGBC's mission is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.

The Social Enterprise Alliance is the only membership organization devoted exclusively to building sustainable non-profits through earned income strategies. Charles Lief became the Board Chair of the group in March, 2004.
Greyston Foundation www.greyston.org
Both of the Hartland Group's partners served as officers of the Greyston Foundation. Over the last 20 years Greyston has become one of the country's leading social entrepreneurship organizations, and played a major role in the stabilization and revitalization of Yonkers, New York.
Greyston Bakery www.greystonbakery.com

The bakery, Greyston's first initiative, was created to offer residents of Southwest Yonkers an opportunity to hold a real job regardless of their employment history. The Greyston Bakery produces brownie chips for Ben & Jerry's ice cream and Haagen Dazs, as well as fine desserts sold by gourmet restaurants, hotels and specialty stores. A new state-of-the-art facility, designed by Maya Lin, the acclaimed designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, opened in 2004. The building was winner of the American Institute of Architects 2004 award as one of the top 10 green projects in the country.

The Garrison Institute, located on the Hudson River in New York, runs programs that work toward deep, insightful exploration of issues and the articulation of specific action steps to enhance society and enrich the human spirit.
