The Warburton Building

The Warburton Building
Yonkers, NY
Previous Project | Next Project 7/9

After the successful creation of the bakery, Greyston’s next effort was to attempt to address Yonkers’ burgeoning homeless problem of the early 1980s. This initiative took shape as the rehabilitation of three abandoned buildings on Warburton Avenue near the heart of Yonkers’ historic downtown.

The three masonry buildings had been neglected and abused during the decades before Greyston’s rehabilitation, leaving little more to work with than exterior shells.

Over the course of 8 years and at the cost of about $8 million, all three buildings were fully restored. They currently include housing for 49 formerly homeless families, a child care facility that serves 84 children, and offices that provide self-sufficiency counseling to Greyston’s tenants.

The buildings were financed through Homeless Housing Assistance Corporation grants, federal HOME loans administered by the City of Yonkers, low-income and historic tax credit investments by the Enterprise Social Investment Corporation, and loans from the Chase Community Development Corporation.

In 2000, a fourth building on an adjacent block was turned into a technology center that gives Greyston housing’s children and adults the opportunity to learn to use modern computer technology.
